Just been to Salisbury Art’s Centre’s ‘Wearing and Bearing’ exhibition. Lya Garcia, a French artist, who looks at the relationship between fashion and identity and the way that the things we wear – or don’t wear – reflect our nature. Lya Garcia considers the artificial nature of social conventions which define and restrain our appearance and bodily expression. Can we change by simply putting on someone else’s clothes? Paris-based curator Bettina Bauerfeind has been working with Lya to catalogure her work from the early 1980s to the present. On show was documentary photographs from Lya’s early career, video works and crocheted sculptures. – All absolutely fascinating! Well worth a visit….
